UK Hallmarking & Precious Metal Standards

Precious Metals, Independently Verified

At Brennmore, precious metal should be exactly what it claims to be.

UK hallmarking provides independent assurance of the precious metal content of a piece of jewellery, helping protect customers and giving you confidence in what you wear.

Brennmore jewellery sold in the UK is hallmarked where required under the Hallmarking Act 1973.

What Is a UK Hallmark?

A UK hallmark is an independent verification of precious metal purity.

Rather than relying solely on a manufacturer’s description, qualifying jewellery is tested by an authorised Assay Office before the official hallmark is applied.

A complete UK hallmark contains three compulsory marks:

Sponsor’s Mark

Identifies the company or individual who submitted the piece for hallmarking.

Fineness Mark

Confirms the purity of the precious metal.

For gold, you may see:

375 — 9ct Gold
585 — 14ct Gold
750 — 18ct Gold

Assay Office Mark

Identifies the official UK Assay Office responsible for testing and hallmarking the piece.

What Does 585 Mean?

Many Brennmore solid gold pieces are crafted in 14ct solid gold.

The hallmark 585 means that the gold alloy contains a minimum of 585 parts pure gold per 1,000 parts, equivalent to 14 carat gold.

This mark provides an independent confirmation of the precious metal standard of the jewellery.

When Is Hallmarking Required?

Under UK hallmarking law, gold jewellery weighing 1 gram or more must carry a legally recognised hallmark when it is sold or described as gold.

Gold pieces below the statutory exemption weight do not legally require a hallmark.

Being below the hallmarking weight threshold does not change the stated gold purity of the piece — it simply means that the item is exempt from compulsory hallmarking because of its weight.

More Than a Stamp

A hallmark is more than a mark inside a ring or on a clasp.

It represents independent verification, traceability and one of the oldest forms of consumer protection in the United Kingdom.

For us, it is another way of giving you confidence that the precious metal you choose is exactly what it is represented to be.

Made to be worn. Made to be trusted.
