Choosing a length
Length does more to determine how a pendant looks than the pendant itself, and it is the one decision you actually have to make.
14 to 15 inches sits at the base of the neck, close to a choker position. It suits open and scoop necklines and looks deliberate rather than accidental. It is the least flexible length because it is visible against almost everything.
16 inches sits on or just below the collarbone. This is the shortest length that works comfortably with most clothing, and it is the standard base layer if you intend to layer chains.

Matching pendant to neckline

The rules are straightforward: vary the length by at least two inches or the chains tangle and sit on top of each other; give only one layer a substantial pendant and keep the others plain or very small, or the arrangement becomes cluttered; and keep to one metal colour unless you are mixing deliberately.
