Why studs are the best value in vermeil
Vermeil is at least 2.5 microns of gold bonded over solid 925 sterling silver — five times the thickness of ordinary plating, over a precious metal rather than brass. It wears at friction points, which is why it is a poor choice for a ring worn permanently.
Earrings barely have friction points. A stud sits in a lobe and is handled twice a day at most. It is not rubbing against a desk, a keyboard, a bag strap or another ring. In practice this means a vermeil stud will look new for years where a vermeil ring worn equally often would show wear.
That is why the split here is 30 vermeil to 23 solid gold rather than the solid-gold weighting you see in rings and bracelets. If you want several pairs, vermeil is the sensible way to get them. Backs, and why they matter more than you would think
The back is the part of a stud that determines whether you still own it in a year.
